Formal education, early influences & artistic beginnings
Born in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) in 1964, Maya spent her weekends as a child visiting the Hermitage and Russian museums with her mother. These early encounters with art became foundational to her practice.
Her formal training began at age six. She graduated in 1987 with a Master's Degree in Graphic Art from the St. Petersburg State Academy of Industrial and Applied Art, then worked as a book illustrator and mural artist before immigrating to Canada in 1990.
